High School STEM Activities
Throughout the school year, we discuss throughout marching band and concert band the physics of sound, the harmonic series, the frequencies that our instruments produce, how temperature affects sound, how to use technology to perform better in tune, and how this knowledge can help us to balance and blend as a band. We can also relate our knowledge of frequencies to mathematics.
On a daily basis, we relate rhythm to mathematics, as all of notated rhythm deals with fractions. We also discuss how the structure of music can relate to mathematics.
During marching season, we consistently relate our marching drill to distance, angles, shape, and various other parts of mathematics to clean our drill.
Occasionally, we can relate how different instruments are engineered, which allows for the creation of different sounds.
On a daily basis, we use technology through metronomes, tuners, digital keyboards, drill writing software, music notation software, and applications that allow us to perform at a higher level.
We actively focus on human anatomy, health, dance, and physical education through our posture, breathing, and movement; we examine how these factors can allow us to perform at the best of our ability, build endurance, keep us healthy, and enhance our performance.
